William J. Scribner
March 11, 1939 – September 16, 2016
The Bronx Arts Ensemble musicians, staff and Board deeply mourn the passing of our beloved Founder and Director Emeritus, Bill Scribner. We will greatly miss his kind and generous spirit, commitment to excellence, great sense of humor and overwhelming energy and devotion that inspired each of us. No idea or project was too small for Bill’s attention and hard work for his cherished Ensemble.
As Founder of the BAE in 1972 as well as bassoonist/performer, Bill early recognized the need for fully professional performances in the Bronx. From modest beginnings as a wind quintet, Bill developed an orchestra with the finest colleagues in the city performing with him, giving hundreds of concerts annually. He tirelessly found and performed new music by local composers, including the growing cadre of Latino musicians, and developed one of the most comprehensive arts-in-education programs in the city, in schools which before had no arts instruction. His great achievements are acclaimed, and will be long treasured in the Bronx and beyond.
Bill leaves his wife, Marsha Heller, oboist and Artist Member of the BAE, and son Andrew Scribner, research chemist in Durham, NC.
