Moses Kyle McCarter has been sharing the art of capoeira in The Bronx for two decades, much of that time working in collaboration with The Bronx Arts Ensemble, where he has shared the Capoeira Concepts Curriculum in schools throughout The Bronx. He is the founder of Bronx Capoeira, a traditional Capoeira school in The Bronx modeled in the traditions of Bahian, Brazilian capoeira. His work seeks to share the concepts and philosophies integral to capoeira, being positive movement, song, dance, martial-art,
and community.
Moses “Bronx” McCarter was first introduced to Capoeira in 2001. A year later, inspired by the beauty and complexity of the art, he decided to move to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He ended up living there for three years and trained at Academia Mandinga. While at the Academia, Moses was determined to train hard and learn as much about Capoeira movement, music, history and culture as possible. It was in Bahia that Moses acquired the nickname, Bronx – homage to the borough he was born and raised in. After moving back to New York City he started teaching in various schools and co-created the non-profit organization Capoeira Concepts. Since leaving Brazil, Moses has continued to develop as a student and a teacher. He has also been invited to Toronto, France, Spain, Prague, Boston and Atlanta for workshops and events. In his current capacity, Moses continues to teach at various high schools in the Bronx, bringing Capoeira to students of international backgrounds and NYC native students. In addition, he is the instructor (Instructor Bronx) at Senshi Okami for adult classes and is the main instructor for the after school program available to elementary and middle school students.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and District 12 Council Member Kevin C. Riley.
