Back by popular demand, the Bronx Arts Ensemble’s Mingus Tribute is returning for the annual Memorial Day Concert. Leader-arranger-bassist Mary Ann McSweeney and a jazz band featuring BAE’s amazing teachers and Cuban-Bronx pianist and composer, Elio Villafranca, present McSweeney’s take on the legendary bassist Charles Mingus. The Mingus Tribute highlights the diverse and politically-engaged compositions from this prolific 20th-century artist, incorporating the blues, swing, bebop, classical, and gospel. Students from the BAE choir program at the Rosalyn Yalow Charter School will join the ensemble to perform original lyrics to Mingus’ “Work Song” and “Freedom.” The holiday all-American music tradition continues! Bring a picnic and a friend. Event sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz. Free admission!
