New American Traditions – Bronx Arts Ensemble string quartet performs chamber music written by established and emerging American composers.
The concert will include William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartette – Musical Portraits of Three friends (1960), a charming three-movement work with movements aptly titled, ‘the sentimental one,’ ‘the quiet one,’ and ‘the jovial one.’ 7 PM (2021), by BAE’s own Evelyn Petcher Brandes, is a musical impression of the 7 o’clock cheer to celebrate healthcare and other essential workers at the height of the pandemic. Florence Price’s Five Folksongs in Counterpoint (c. 1951), popular folk songs are given a “classical” reimagining which speaks to both Ms. Price’s mastery of western classical composition tradition and her pride of heritage.
Performers:
Jorge Ávila, violin
Evelyn Petcher Brandes, violin
Sally Shumway, viola
Eliana Mendoza, cello
